Francis Bacon revolutionised figurative painting in the 20th century. The English painter unmasked his subjects in a provocative and ruthless manner. Deformed bodies, grimacing faces and the materiality of colour make us aware of brutality and sexuality, existential abysses and the fears of existence. Works like the portrait Pope Innocent X from Velázquez inspired him just as much as Eisenstein s epic film The Battleship Potemkin for his famous motif: the Scream. Author Melvyn Bragg accompanies the painter throughout his day. This begins in his London atelier, leads us on to his favourite pub and ends up in a gambling club in Soho. **International Emmy,

Utterly Fascinating View of Francis Bacon5
I can’t praise this film enough. It is all Bacon being interviewed, very very perceptively by Melvin Bragg, thoroughly laced with images of his paintings and those of other artists. It gives an excellent portrait of Bacon – by Bacon – in 4 different locales, including his studio, which is of itself a stunning work of art. His incisive comments on his work, that of other artists (Velazquez, Van Gogh, Ingres and a few he doesn’t care for), his working methods and inspirations, as well views on art in general are something I’ve not seen regarding any other artist, period. As a plus, Bacon comes off as a totally honest, open and extremely likable person. I think that even those who don’t like Bacon’s art will find the film fascinating. Bottom line: the only flaw I can see is that it only runs about 55 minutes, I wish it were 10 hours or more.

Backstage Secrets: On the Road with the Rock Band RUSH Home Use Described:

Long Description:
Go behind the scenes to get a backstage look at what it takes to present the legendary band Rush during the 2008 Snakes & Arrows Concert Tour. It may appear to be one of the most exciting and glamorous jobs in the world – but being a roadie with a top-rated world-famous rock and roll band can be a grueling marathon of 18 hour work days, on an easy day. A bad is actually a couple of days, 40 hours spent hauling gear, assembling huge stacks of speakers, lifting them a hundred feet in the air, tuning instruments for demanding musicians and being cut off from every lover, friend and relative you have. This series takes you to the show you never see when you take your seat for a concert by the legendary band Rush. All the backstage secrets are revealed.

This DVD includes 5 parts on two discs including:

Part 1: Sound
Sure it sounds easy. Turn on some speakers and listen to the show. Well, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Everyone in every seat needs to hear the show equally well. That sound can be affected by the shape of the building, the temperature inside and even whether the audience is wearing long or short sleeves. And then there’s the show the band hears. Each member of Rush needs to hear different instruments at different levels at different times during the show.

Part 2: Lights
You don’t buy a ticket to hear a rock show; you buy a ticket to see a rock show. Of course that’s not as simple as turning on the house lights and sitting back. Lighting sets the mood for each song. That means lights are meticulously placed which isn’t that easy when each show is in a different building. Once they are set up perfectly, the must be directed by an artist who plays the lighting board like an instrument.

Part 3: Instrument Technicians
One of the most demanding and stressful jobs on the road is the instrument technician. Each one is charged with tuning and maintaining the magic wands these musical wizards wield. For the musicians to have a good show, their instruments must be perfect. Each night is an exercise in perfection for the four technicians on the Rush tour, guitar, drums, bass and keyboards.

Part 4: Lighting and Video
Let’s face it, not every seat is in the front row, but everyone pays for a ticket. That means someone has to make sure everyone gets a good look at the band. So each concert is also a television show broadcast on a 50 foot screen.

Part 5: Road Manager
Most of the road crew are responsible for making sure their area of responsibility is working. But one person has to make sure the whole thing works, every night in every city. The road manager is the conductor of this huge orchestration and you better believe he is on his game all the time.

What Customers are Saying:

Behind the Rush without the Rush2
This is a behind the scenes look at setting up for Rush concerts. I had done this kind of work for one summer, so i knew a lot about what they were talking about. I am a huge Rush fan, but this is one item that I could do without. Seeing there stage set-up is not as cool as seeing them perform on stage. Love Rush, and I know that the crew works hard for the shows, but I do not need a chronicle of their work. I say pass on this DVD.

Ok content but terrible video quality3
Having watched the first two episodes, it is clear that the concept this video is trying to show has a lot of merit. Showing some of what goes on behind the scenes setting up for shows in several arenas, and brief bits of the actual performance during the shows.

What is also clear is that this is a very cheaply made video. It’s potentially better than home video quality, but in many places it’s really hard to even give it that level of quality. There are considerable compression artifacts in the video, to the point of distraction. This becomes very obvious in the lighting episode, but others have similar problems. If you’re thinking “How it’s made” or similar History Channel or Science Channel serial documentary, it’s nowhere close quality wise.

The videos are also a bit of a tease. They start going into detail on one of the roles, then jump back to high level fluff like “waiting for points”. If you’re interested in what they’re actually using to produce the show, you’ll be disappointed, very little of that information made it into the final video. If you know what various bits which could be in the rig look like already, the video gets you close enough to pick out what the various items actually are, but again you have to know what you are looking at first.

The idea, done right would be great, but as is, this video is often painful to watch.

Great Content, Lousy Quality4
As others have mentioned, the content of this video is amazing! You will not be disappointed by the amount of detail this documentary has in it. However, the supposedly “HD” quality of the video is terrible. Bright lights and fast movement cause lines and blocks to appear on the screen. At first, I thought it was my TV. But, after reading others’ reviews, it’s definitely the way they made the DVDs. It’s still watchable, but it can get annoying, especially during the Lighting section. It’s still worth buying just for the content, though.

Get a foothold on reflexology and massage of the foot with expert massage therapist, Meade Steadman. Meade provides detailed instruction, demonstrating the strokes and techniques on both the right and left foot and on different models: young and old, male and female. For the reflexology section, Meade discusses the body’s physiology, contraindications (particularly geriatric concerns), history, and how the anatomy of the foot maps to each part of the body. The comprehensive massage demonstration shows techniques to work the foot and lower leg for flexibility, relaxation, and improved circulation. Meade’s demonstrations show how to warm up the feet, work the “whole body” for balance, and focus on specific areas of concern. (1 Hr. 28 Mins.)

Great Effort and a Great Lesson5
The title is appropriate for the content presented in this DVD. Having never studied massage techniques nor recieved such massage treatment, I found the explainations and camera angels to be informative. But read other reviews, because I dont havin any means of comparision!

The therapist goes through different techniques and demonstrates them dispite his own preferences. The most interesting part for me was the anatomuy of the foot and how it directly relates to the rest of the body. I’d recomend this video to anyone who interested, but might not be as useful for advanced therapists or professionals.

Best reflexology DVD5
excellent dvd. It goes over several different techniques anatomy of the foot . i learned alot watching it he first time.

Another Great Barbie Movie5
My 4 year old has loved the Barbie Movies since she was 2 and this one, the third installment in the Fairytopia series did not dissapoint. I personally prefer the ones based on fairytales (Princess and the Pauper, Nutcracker, and Twevle Dancing Princesses) but I thought that this was the best movie of the Fairytopia series. The anamation is awesome. We saw this movie on Nickelodeon and recorded on our DVR. We have watched it at least once everyday since, great movie!

Barbie Movies5
This movie is great for someone who is a total Barbie Fan, My 4 yr old daughter loves this movie. Great story line and plot, Its a wonderful Barbie experience!!!! buy it and that someone special will LOVE IT!!!

Girls love it!4
Although I am not a big Barbie fan, my 4 and 6 year old girls love this movie. It is a pretty decent movie-good messages about being nice and doing the right thing. Believe it or not Barbie is actually a strong role model. She solves problems on her own and doesn’t wait for her Prince to save her.

Believing in oneself can be difficult, even with the support of friends. The formerly wingless fairy Elina has saved Fairytopia more than once, proving herself against Fungus Maximus and turning the evil Laverna into a frog in Barbie Fairytopia and Barbie Fairytopia–Mermaidia, but she still questions her own abilities when Guardian Azura selects her to become her apprentice and learn the all-important flight of spring–a ritual which ensures another year of vitality in Fairytopia. The taunts and snobby attitudes of her fellow apprentices serve to further undercut Elina’s self-esteem, but she vows to do her best to master the flight of spring and soon proves worthy of her appointment. When the trickery of Laverna threatens to stop the flight of spring and destroy Fairytopia forever, it falls to the new apprentices to save Fairytopia. Of course, Elina will play a pivotal role in the group’s eventual success or failure. Prepubescent attitudes and shallowness reign among most of the apprentices, but most eventually see the error of their ways and the clear message is the importance of believing in oneself. Captures Japanese life and Baseball incredibly accurately!5
For one thing, this movie pivoted on the theme of baseball is a world better than the Madonna/Davis starring “A league of their own” or the more recent travesties like “A field of dreams”. For another, the schism between American and Japanese ideologies/way of life is just so truly captured that it is difficult to believe this movie is not the de-facto recommendation for people interested in Japan. Guess it missed out on the major league scene because, well, quite literally it is not about US major leagues?

A US baseball star (Selleck) is traded to a Japanese baseball team and finds himself at intellectual loggerheads with the extant coach of the team. This, plus a slight romantic sub-plot as he falls in love with the coach’s daughter.

Barring some minor cheesy moments — e.g., when the coach takes Selleck to a golf driving range and makes him hit the balls with a baseball bat, only to hear “I want to hit balls” instead of “I want to hit baseballs”…hmm — the accuracy of Japanese life is truly stunning. Including, eating ramen with vociferous slurps, digging chopsticks vertically in rice bowls being a no-no, the language used to communicate between the American/Japanese, even a scene with a real on-sen. A refreshing break after stereotype galore seen in movies of that time, including the entertaining “Black Rain” or the absolutely goofball “Rising Sun”.

To cut to the chase, this is an under-rated gem of a movie, very well shot, some messages about life and profession as seen from two very different perspectives that are likely to resonate with either side. Selleck takes the cake with his acting, baring his tush (literally, I may add) to portray a grouchy American, snubbing people relentlessly and throwing tantrums in public, then letting us inside this character to understand his views. Takakura Ken, needless to say, is fascinating as usual.

A must watch if you are interested in Japan, or baseball, or a good light-hearted cross cultural take on life and sport.

Heartwarming drama hiding behind a light sports comedy4
MR. BASEBALL is a film of paradoxes. Written and filmed as a “light, sports comedy” it truly has a heartwarming core as human and universal as some of Capra’s finest. At the plot level, you have the paradox of baseball, a fine old American game, as it is played in Japan – turned around, with American values cast off and Japanese values imprinted upon the game. (Some of the superficial “sports comedy” results from Jack’s uncomprehending disbelief at how “basa-boru” is played in Japan.) You also have a lead character who’s presented as an over-the-hill, aging baseball star, but who is actually quite immature – pro ball allowed him to postpone growing up. And you have a lead character who is rudely resistant to the changes in his life that are being forced upon him, refusing to accept the curveball that life has given him, in the midst of a new country, a new manager, a new team, and a new girlfriend, who have all welcomed him and try to accept him. Sound like heavy stuff? Not really. It’s a charming “clash of cultures” comedy that takes place on the national, sports, romantic, and professional levels. But if you watch it sensitively enough, you will also find a great story about a man who has to abandon his immaturity and grow up way too late in life (causing some amount of personal pain), and finds success in places he never expected it. I love the story, but I also have great respect for Selleck’s performance; he bares his tush (literally) to portray an ugly American, insulting people and throwing tantrums in public, then lets us inside this character to understand his dismay. It also doesn’t hurt if you’re a big fan of Takakura Ken like I am. MR. BASEBALL is a surprising “loss of innocence” tale.

Mr. Baseball is a HOOT!5
I loved this movie! It is so funny and yet so many of the situations in Japan are similar to my own experiences. If you’ve never been to Japan, you will still laugh at all the right places for the right reasons. If you’ve been to Japan, it will be that much funnier. The scene where Tom Selleck drags his interpreter into his apartment is great because a Japanese person would NEVER wear his shoes indoors, so the scene where this poor soul is being dragged into the room by his tie and trying to kick off his shoes is classic. Watch it, you won’t be disappointed!

“The Judy Garland DVD’s Continue!”5
Many people regard the episodes produced for “The Judy Garland Show” to be the entertainer’s best work. Originally broadcast on CBS from 1963-1964, Judy Garland’s much talked about series never stood a chance in the Nielsen ratings being opposite NBC’s powerful “Bonanaza” series that was the #1 rated show in the nation. This beautiful set features two additional episodes from this beloved show. First up is episode four that was broadcast on October 13th, 1963 and featured the wonderful Lena Horn. Next is episode five that later aired on December 15th, 1963. That show is one of the most well-known “Judy” episodes as it featured Tony Bennett. These episodes have been digitally restored from the original studio master tapes and come with 5.1 surround that has also been restored. Unfortunately, there are no bonus features. This single set DVD drops in stores on March 23rd, 2010. A fantastic addition to anyone’s home DVD library.

underage sex3
There is a very popular commonly-exercised steady trick of spatting at the US by creating movies about non-stop mafia-feuds based on inter-racial abuse and hatred, on which landscape sex scenes are the most entertaining viewing element of, while referring to classic masterpieces as this film presented.

This show is exactly a perfect example of the blooding murdering Italian-Sino gangster-fighting to dominate extortion from/”protection of” the local NYC Downtown businesses.

Beautiful girl and a very handsome sexually advanced baby-looking block of a misunderstandable age are really nice in a particular act of more-to-imagine-than-shown.

This movie is the most interesting to enjoying sexy-looking young men testosterone-fuelled fights and shooting on the dirty streets of a seemingly American New York-location.

Really, “Make Love-Not War!” is the best short description deployable in this case.

Unlike the outrageous fantasy plots of cartoons that preceded it, “Jonny Quest” drew on science and detective-style logic to solve mysteries and apprehend sophisticated villains. Viewers were transported to exotic locales as Jonny’s dad Dr. Benton Quest tackled each new government assignment, aided by ex-agent “Race” Bannon, the Indian boy Hadji, family bulldog Bandit…and of course, his fearless 11-year-old son Jonny (voiced by actor Tim Matheson). Now all 26 classic episodes from Year One charting the fantastic exploits of brave and brainy Jonathan Quest are available for the first time ever, digitally re-mastered on DVD in a deluxe four-disc collectors set, featuring over 11 hours of classic original TV programming and newly-added enhanced content.

REMASTERED means REVISED Jonny Quest DVD Box Set3
When the JONNY QUEST DVD Box Set was finally released I was one of the first to buy it. The wait for these fantastic episodes was finally over. And what a long wait its been! What a shame it is then that the “politically correct” people at Warner Brothers found it their duty to EDIT, that’s right, EDIT these classic cartoons! A typical EDIT from DISC ONE “Pursuit of the Po-Ho” A purple Race Bannon confronts the Po-Hos who have Dr. Quest held hostage with,”All right you ignorant savages, get a load of Aquizio you heathen monkeys!” The “REMASTERED” version is a watered down, “Get a load of Aquizio!” All the while Race’s mouth is moving but no words come out! At least no words that some idiots at Warners find offensive. Who are they and how dare they think they can just EDIT someone elses work! What’s even more outrageous is that for some reason they don’t have a problem showing the UN-EDITED versions on their own CARTOON NETWORK! Get it together guys and RE-ISSUE the Jonny Quest Box Set UNTOUCHED, UN-EDITED, and truly REMASTERED as your packaging states! And the next time you think its “your job” to EDIT a classic cartoon, DON”T! Thank GOD your EDIT MONKEY kept his stinking paws off the LOONEY TUNES Box Set!

A Hacked, quicky transfer1
When I found out that all 26 episodes of the classic Jonny Quest were released on DVD I was stunned. I felt that finally the HB execs are getting it together and recognizing the good stuff. After watching the first two episodes I realized I had been DUPED! Editing dialogue to be PC, using the same ending credits for all episodes and no credit for Doug Wildey. A (…)release of the best classic prime-time animation of the 1960’s.

After I finish watching all the episodes, I’m donating the DVD’s to my local public library. I know better now to read the reviews before buying. I think Warner Brothers and Hana-Barbera owe all of us an explanation for this hack-job. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO DICK WITH IT?

When I pay for DVD’s, I expect the real deal without edits and deception. I can only hope that they fix it with another release with everything intact except the insert commercials. And you can bet they know that we will buy it again. Greedy, corporate pigs!

Baby boomers of a certain age, and anyone fond of classic Hanna Barbera cartoons, might find the 40-year-old episodes in Jonny Quest: The Complete First Season an exciting blast from the past. Five years before Hanna Barbera made a comedy about amateur youths solving exotic mysteries in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, the animation giant captured a more serious spirit from a different era in Jonny Quest. The series played on primetime television–a very big deal for animation at the time–in 1964, and was infused with energy from sundry pop trends as well as cold war paranoia and a prevailing belief in limitless technology (largely inspired by America’s race to the moon). Part intelligence thriller, part science fiction, Jonny Quest made a child’s adventure out of thwarting international espionage and sabotage with super-computers, state-of-the-art transportation to every corner of the planet, an apparently bottomless budget for building fantastic weapons, martial arts, and more. The fact that schoolboy Jonny, as well as his best friend, Hadji, and canine companion Bandit, were having adventures akin to those of James Bond was terribly exciting.

Young Jonny (voiced by actor Tim Matheson, later a co-star of Animal House and The West Wing) is the motherless son of government scientist Dr. Benton Quest. The latter conducts all manner of research from a remote island, where he lives with Jonny, Hadji, Bandit, and chief assistant Race Bannon, a rugged fellow who tutors Jonny but also provides muscle when the group is on assignment anywhere from the Arctic to Calcutta. The original 26 episodes (on four discs) find the team battling conspirators amidst half-sunken pirate ships in the Sargasso Sea (in the pilot, “Mystery of the Lizard Men,” sans Hadji), working undercover to stop a Jahilipur manufacturer of fake gold (”Riddle of the Gold”), and foiling an effort to steal an experimental, “mind-numbing” drug (and passing off a Race look-alike as the real McCoy) in “Double Danger.” (The last introduces Race’s hottie girlfriend, Jezebel Jade.) The slow, deliberate animation (even more stiff than Scooby) can get a little wearing, but the uniqueness of Jonny Quest as a genuine adventure-drama makes this collection a must. –Tom Keogh

not that bad of a ghost movie3
Ghosts of Goldfield is not a bad little movie to watch.I was disappointed that Roddy Piper was kinda flat.He was good in They Live and the rest of the cast was ok.Would I buy it? No. There are 2 gruesome deaths but thats it.It could of been a total waste, but its watchable. The story is simple a group of film makers record ghosts in an abandoned Hotel. There is only one ghost perhaps it would of been better if there was more.

terrible1
I did’nt like this movie at all. It was kind of boring, really just terrible and totally forgetable. I would’nt even want to watch it on tv for free. A total waste of time.

DON’T FOLLOW THIS PIPER3
Familiar scenario: a group of friends investigate a supposedly haunted hotel and wind up dead. Here’s some other tidbits:
1. TWILIGHT’s Kellan Lutz shows he’s not going to establish himself outside the TWILIGHT franchise.
2. Wrestler Roddy Piper gives more believable performances in the ring.
3. Blood doesn’t spurt like cranberry juice.
4. There’s nothing fresh or scary in this ghost story.
AVOID.

Great- but need the whole season5
I am a JP junkie, 1st qualite. The CD set is as lovely as the show, and everyone knows what a great educator JP is- so why didnt they give us the whole season?

But the 8 episodes here are representative of his by the way style- for instance, in the sausage and potato packet in Episode 8, he shows you how to make your own quick mustard. Ditto for how to peel/chop and puree garlic. How to do risotto correctly, and how to identify what has made it go wrong for you in the past. all little secrets not to be known unless you see the show. These little tidbits are ladled heavily throughout the DVD set. In other episodes that I have on vhs (that I taped myself throughout the season) he talks about using a broken china dish to sharpen knives, – unfortunately I dont think this tidbit made it to the DVD.

The sound is a bit rough- on my set, Jacques’ mic was not turned off when suddenly steam overwhelms it (producing a brushing sound on the audio). But he is so great, and the show is so helpful, with practical info I had to rate it a 5 star.

Get this DVD- you will NOT be disappointed!

Simple Elegance5
Jacques Pepin’s latest cooking DVD is simple elegance. From the the four item menu to it’s presentation, Jacques clearly explains his techniques and how to prepare the food.
This is a well prepared, produced and entertaining DVD.
