The great Roger Corman produced and directed this cheerfully gory skewering of beatniks and the arts community. Dick Miller plays Walter Paisley, a no-talent busboy who idolizes the artsy types who frequnt the coffeehouse where he works. When Walter accidentally kills his landlady’s cat, he tries to hide the crime by covering the kitty in clay, and is soon hailed as a sculpting genius. Sure enough, the fickle arts community begins clamoring for some larger work. As a horror movie, A Bucket of Blood is merely okay, but it’s great as a little black comedy. Corman works in some nice grusome touches, such as backing up Walter’s Big Emotional Moment with a steady drizzle of blood from a victim’s arm. Most of the jokes aimed at the artists’ pretensions still seem fresh: When offering Walter some breakfast, Maxwell announces that they’re having “soy and wheat-germ pancakes, organic guava nectar, calcium lactate and tomato juice and garbanzo omelettes sprinkled with smoked yeast.” The free-verse parodies are also very funny. Don’t expect Bucket of Blood to keep you up with nightmares, but do sit back and prepare to enjoy a refreshingly sick sense of humor. –Ali Davis

Love fills the air as Valentine’s Day approaches–but it’s mostly unrequited love for the Peanuts gang, in A Charlie Brown Valentine. The first new Peanuts feature to be created after cartoonist Charles M. Schulz’s death in 2000, this 25-minute show looks and sounds like earlier Charlie Brown fare: vividly animated round-faced kids (penned by the king of the uberpopular newspaper comic strip, himself) and a skippy piano score. Chuck still can’t attract the little red-headed girl, Peppermint Patty can’t sway his affections, and Schroeder ignores Lucy’s blatant requst for kisses and chocolate. But this story lacks the heart of Charlie Brown’s Halloween and Christmas specials, in which characters occasionally step away from their ponderings to skate, dance, or just act like kids. Instead, chronic whining hogs nearly all the action. When Chuck finally dons a tuxedo for his date at the school Valentine’s Day dance, the payoff feels too little, too late. Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can’t follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequnces between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise’s character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards–who makes a nice impression as Cruise’s average-Joe pal–and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. –Tom Keogh

The first of 1997’s volcano disaster movies (the second being Volcano) was arguably the better of the two, but both of them made for passable entertainment with some spectacular special effects to serve as icing on the stale cake. After all, Dante’s Peak doesn’t pretend to be anything more than an updated variation on a whole catalog of disaster movie cliches. Despite all that, it’s reasonably enjoyable. It’s an added bonus that the script is just smart enough to allow Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton to play their roles with straight faces, never condescending to the audience of the formulaic story. He’s a volcano expert from the U.S. Geological Survey, and she’s the mayor of a cozy Washington State town perched beneath a volcano that’s about to blow. Telltale signs are everywhere, so evacuation must be carried out immediately. Of course, not everybody’s eager to leave, and even some of Brosnan’s colleagus think his alarm is premature. This sets the stage for massive ash clouds, rivers of raging mud and molten rock, flattened forests, and death-defying escapes by Brosnan, Hamilton, and some (but not all) of her family, friends, and townsfolk. So what if it’s all pretty flaky… and can a four-wheel-drive vehicle travel over fire and molten lava without bursting its tires? Don’t ask too many qustions, and you’ll find Dante’s Peak to be (if you’ll pardon the pun) a total blast. –Jeff Shannon
