i was searching for fireplace tools to give as a gift for a campfire enthusiast who recently moved into an apartment with a working wood burning fireplace… initially my search was for a tool set, but quickly i realized it might be a waste of money because most of those tools are more display pieces as they re not very practical. when i came across this product i nervously selected it… it wasn’t as pretty as some of the other sets, but my guy told me to go with it because it seemed to be exactly what my friend needed. When the fire log grabber was opened and used, it was perfect… not too big, the grabber mechanism is solid and not klunky, and overall it seems like a solid well made tool.. my friend couldn’t be happier with this gift!

I bought this at Radio Shack thinking it would just be something I would use once then throw away. I desperately needed a way to wire in the remote start in my truck. I still have it and use it fairly often. For being so cheap it works great. I have had it for over a year and 1/2 and am only on the second set of batteries. I can’t believe how long they last. It has a small light to illuminate what you are working on not super bright, but better than nothing. The time it takes to go from cold to hot is really quick, about 5 seconds. It has an actual metal tip unlike the ceramic “cold heat” that I bought a while back. (My cold heat now lives in the garbage).
Overall it is much more useful than I expected. Since it is battery powered, it wouldn’t make sense as a primary soldering iron. But for those times you want portability, it defiantly exceeds expectations.

I also have an HP DV4t, half a dozen older Toshiba, Sony and HP notebooks, and a whole gaggle of netbooks. So I’m kind of addicted to cool portable hardware.
Among the myriad laptops & netbooks I’ve owned and used, this one is not the best, but certainly above-average.
Stylish, Core i3 is quick, memory & HDD are roomy. The screen is bright, color saturation is good but mildly washed out relative to the better panels out there. The 8″ 1600×900 panel on Sony Vaio P-series is the worst color I’ve ever seen; this one is above average, just not the best. Beware that this unit (Amazon’s, specifically) does not come with a backlit keyboard, which is part of the standard U505-S2005 build spec on Toshiba’s website. I bought & installed the backlit keyboard separately, but it cost another . So actually this isn’t a great deal, it’s a cut-rate edition for a cut-rate price. If the backlit keyboard, bluetooth and slot-loading DVD don’t really matter to you, then save yourself maybe 0 and snag one of these. Overall it’s a very stylish case wrapped around some respectable hardware. However, if you don’t care about the relatively compact 13″ LCD or the fashionable presentation of the dark brown case, you might be just as well served with a standard 15.4″ unit from HP or Acer, with similar hardware, for a couple hundred bucks less. That’s true of any laptop that charges a premium for its design.
If you do care about the style and compactness, U505 is a great option.
