i was searching for fireplace tools to give as a gift for a campfire enthusiast who recently moved into an apartment with a working wood burning fireplace… initially my search was for a tool set, but quickly i realized it might be a waste of money because most of those tools are more display pieces as they re not very practical. when i came across this product i nervously selected it… it wasn’t as pretty as some of the other sets, but my guy told me to go with it because it seemed to be exactly what my friend needed. When the fire log grabber was opened and used, it was perfect… not too big, the grabber mechanism is solid and not klunky, and overall it seems like a solid well made tool.. my friend couldn’t be happier with this gift!

This product works well at the 200mm end of a telephoto zoom lens (>2x mag)however at 50mm the increase in magnification is approximately 1.2x (maybe a 20% increase) which is not worth the chromatic aberration this lens introduces. If you are thinking of using this on a DSLR I would only buy it if you are using it at 400mm equivalent or greater. If you’re using it on a compact/ultrazoom you’ll be happy.
When used on a 100mm equivalent Macro lens there is little perceivable effect other than the addition of chromatic aberration in high contrast areas.
At high magnifications be prepared to combat C.A. via software, use a tripod and perhaps a focusing rail.
If you can’t afford a real Macro lens but already have telephoto capability this is for you.
