Comment with NHL 11
First, I traded in about 30 games I was no longer playing at GameStop to get a new copy of this game.
Since Wednesday, September 8, to today Sept. 18, 2010, I’ve put in at least 40 hours into the game. I’ve played about 100 games, most of them with 5 minute period, and about 15 with 10 minute periods. I played mostly Season Modes for the Anaheim ducks and Calgary Hitmen plus a few on-line games.
Great improvements and additions to last years game, but has one major annoying unexpected flaw in gameplay.
I unfortunately sold my copy of HHL10, but I’m going to rebuy it to because it was a great game, for nostalgia because it’s the best NHL hockey before the new physics engine and to supplement NHL11
I’ll START WITH THE BAD SO YOU’LL KNOW. I’VE SUFFERED THE PAIN SO YOU WON’T HAVE TO.
1) There’s this automatic 360 degree tornado spin shot that you have no control over.
For reference, when the opponents goal is at the top of the screen:
When you’ve got the puck and you’re doing the Wayne Gretzy by being behind you’re opponents net in that trapazoidal area or you just travel behind the net and then you come to the front of the left side of the net (from your point of view or the goaltenders right side) and you take a slap shot to the RIGHT SIDE OF THE NET (your right)your player will do this 360 degree tornado spin and shoot the puck to the lower left side of the net. This happens when your player is a right handed shot too. That is not what I wanted. Just because I was directly behind the net and then come to the front and want to blast a SLAP SHOT (and not a quick shot) to the upper right side of the net, I get this 360 degree tornado spin shot to the lower left.
This annoying flay also happens the other way around. If your player is behind the net and you come out in front on you right side (the goalies left) and you take a SLAP SHOT (and not a quick shot) to the left side of the net, you’ll do the 360 spin shot to the lower left. This happens even when your player is a left handed shot.It happens automaticallly.
The work around is to only do a quick shot and not a slap shot in the above scenerios.
If I wanted to do a 360 torado spin shot as described above, let me control when it happens. Let me queeze the left trigger to make it happen. Don’t make it happen automatically when I don’t want it.
(during the game, if you player is a right handed shot but is on his backhand side and you do a slap shot, your player will switch his stance to a right handed stance to do the slap shot and vice versa for players who shoot left–this is not what I’m talking about)
2)There are two menus for you to play on-line. I just started to play on-line last night (09/17/2010). One menu is in the Play Now section for a quick on line ranked match and the other is in the XBOX live menu.
I went to play on line under the Play Now menu and I attemepted about 8 matches but was only able to play one match.
Why, the game I was able to play was when I was the home team. I was able to browse the team list and play. The other seven times my team was the visiting team and my controller was unresponsive. While my opponent was browsing through the team list I was trying to get the controller to browse through the menus and it was didn’t work. The contoller icon just stayed in the center of the scree and wouldn’t move. My only choice was to exit or my opponent exited. Then I went to the XBOX Live menu and played there and everything was fine.
3) Season mode for the Calgary Hitmen (and possibly other non-NHL teams). I’ve played 50 games in Season mode for the Calgary Hitmen and on about 5 of those games when you move to the next game on the schedule, select Simulate Up to This Day, and then select Play Game, the console just freezes up. On screen you’ll see it flashing the LOADING message and then Start will come up solid and the entire console will be frozen and unresponsive. You’ll need to turn off the 360 console at the console, restart the 360 console, go back into Season Mode (in my case, the Calagy Hitmen) select the next game in the schedule, i.e. the game after the one where the console froze, select SIMULATE TO THIS DAY, this having the previous game simulated (the one that froze the console) and then playing the next game in the schedule.
This hasn’t hasn’t happened for SEASON MODE for the the Anaheim Ducks, only the new Candian Hockey League’s WHL Calgary Hitmen. I have two season modes for the Anaheim Ducks (both on different difficulty levels and period lenghts) and it has been perfect just like NHL10.
SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS AND FEATURES TO NHL11 FOR A NEW EXPERIENCE AND WORTH BUYING THE UPGRADE:
1) FACE OFFS. hold your RIGHT stick right or left the pull your stick downwards when the referee’s arm moves/drops the puck–that’s just one option. Or drive into your opponent by pressing the left stick upwards to tie up the opposing player and one of your wingers will get the puck (as long as the opposing player didn’t win the face-off). (NOTE: if you player is twitching or rocking at the faceoff as you’re holding your right or left handedness, it’s because you’re not holding the RIGHT stick completely to the left/9 o’clock position or right/3o’clock position–you’ve got you unwittingly have your stick in the 8 o’clock or 4 o’clock position.)
You can also shoot from the face off circle by pressing up on the right stick.
2) HUSTLE. Press the left stick button to hustle and get that extra speed when needed on offense and on defense. I love how you press down on the left stick button instead of pulling the right trigger or pressing another button as in other games. It’s great when you need it. You don’t need to get carried away with using it all the time. It’s best to mix up you skating speed and gliding (similar to how a pitcher and baseball changes speeds) and then hit the hustle.
3)THE PHYSICS OF THE PLAYERS TAKING HITS WHEN CHECKING THEM AND THEN SEEING THE PLAYERS RECOVERING FROM THE CHECK–it’s life like. The hit they take is different depending on the angle, speed of hit, the type of hit you put on them and how cleanly you hit them. It significantly different than last years and worth experiencing. You can knock players straight on their backs/butts, have them do summersault of various kinds with the hip check, send them off with an injury or have minimal affect if you barely hit them, etc.
4)HIP CHECK. When travelling in the direciton of the player you want to hit, aiming your check with the left stick, press and hold the right stick button–or press and hold the right stick button and aim with the left sick.
5)LEFT BUMPER DEKES. THESE ARE MISSING FROM THE NHL 11 INSTRUCTION MANUAL, but they are there and improved from last year (2 improved–front and back, the left and right are the same). While holding the left bumper, move the right stick UP, DOWN, LEFT, or RIGHT. When pulling down on the right stick, your player will do a toe kick (I believe that’s what it’s called); up on the right stick will do flick the puck up and over deke (primarily to flick the puck up and over defenders stick); left and right on the right stick while holding the left bumper down will do the same fancy deke left or right maneuver as last years game–be sure to be gliding when doing the left and right left bumber dekes or you’ll skate past the puck. You can do all the above Left Bumper Dekes regardless of the direction you’re skatin.
And like always, you can do your own deking, and fake shots with the right stick without left bumper.
Other unique additions/improvements to the gameplay:
1) STANDARD PASSING: quickly pull and release/tap the right trigger for a weaker pass. Pull the right trigger and release for a stronger pass–the strong pass won’t pass until the trigger is released. The longer you hold the right trigger (up to a point) the stronger the pass. To cancel the strong pass, press the left bumper.
2) SLAP SHOT PASS: Pull back on the right stick (just like a slap shot) HOLD DOWN the right bumper and while aiming your pass with the left stick, drive the right stick straight upwards and you’ll do a slap pass to where you want the puck to go. This is good to drive/pass the puck around the boards or when there are only seconds left to get one last shot when the puck is in your end of the ice. IF YOU DON’T DO THE SLAP SHOT PASS CORRECTLY, YOU’LL GET THIS FRUSTRATING WEAK LITTLE DUMP PASS THAT TRAVELS JUST A FEW FEET OR A, SAUCER PASS OR A STANDARD DUMP PUCK INSTEAD OF A SLAP SHOT PASS.
—REMEMBER WITH PASSING— Having the PASS ASSIST SLIDER TO NO ASSISTANCE(or playing the game in HARDCORE MODE where all computer assistance if off is much different from Casual Mode). These’s a slider for the amount of assistance you want of don’t want. If the pass assist if on, you’ll be passing to the player you want almost all the time and you don’t have to worry about being picture perfect with the aim of you pass. With PASS ASSIST all the way off or playing in HARDCORE MODE, it changes the passing game significantly, adds more challenge and fun to the game and grinding it out style of gameplay and makes the game less arcady.
3) BROKEN STICKS and players loosing their sticks (for example, after recieving a huge hit sometimes): Sometimes a player will have a broken stick during the game and that player will be hustling back to the bench to get a new stick. So be sure not to pass to that player. Players can break sticks when shooting. Players will attempt to play with no stick there in the middle of defending againsts a puck carrier, and other players can give a stickless player their stick.
4) The ice gets frosty as the period progresses and you can see some skate marks in the ice. Then the ice is beautiful and smooth (resurfaced) when the next period starts.
5) Shots that will miss the net if you shoot at a bad angle and aim poorly with too much power behind them. There will also be shots hitting the cross bar too and side post.
6) FAKE SHOT WITH KICK LEG: just press the right stick button.
7) Disallowed goals. This rarely happens. It adds to the realism. Not a big deal/insignificant. There’s a replay process involved and a little suspense and then the goal either stands or is disallowed.
Power Play: There’s a tab underneath the team that is on a power play (along with the letters PP and how much time remaining on the penalty), or will be getting to have a power play instead of just a highlighted bottom border like last years game.
Some other nice features, not all of them new:
–Other leagues: AHL, Canadien Hockey League (i.e., WHL, OHL, QMJHL), prospective teams (just two of them), National teams (like team USA, CANADA, ect.), and about 6 European leagues.
In NHL 10, I only played NHL and National teams. In HHL 11, I enjoy playing the minor league teams. It adds dimension and a change of pace compared to just playing the NHL and national teams. Currenly I’ve played a couple of ‘Play Now’ matches with Montreal vs. Quebec teams in the Quebec junior hockey league, a few games between the Calgary Hitmen and Edmonton Oil Kings, and am playing in season mode for the Calgary Hitmen in addition to playing season mode for the Anaheim Ducks. I also enjoy playing in the European teams. The Natianal League is the Swiss hockey league, then there’s leagues in Germany, Finland, Sweden, I think Iceland plus a couple others. (I can’t read German or any those German-esque languages).
–NEW: Hockey Ultimate Team
–ON-LINE play is beefed up with EA Sports league along with all the other on line playing options for the on-line people.
–Season mode, playoff mode, battle for the cup mode and just play now.
–Cusomize the game: period length; Rookie, Default, Pro, Superstar; Casual, Pro, Hardcore modes, customize the sliders for many many aspects of the game and for the human and AI skills, pass assist to on or off, shot assist to manual or on (manual is more fun and challenging–you have to aim your shot) penalties, goalie mode on or off, ect, ect.
–Practice Mode
–CREATE A PLAY MODE
–Ability to adjust the camera. I always play PREFER UP so my opponents goal is always at the top of the screen and my goal is always at the bottom for all periods. You also have Ice, Classic, Action, Ovehead.
–Fighting.
–Ability to customize and create your own soundtrack for the game.
–Plenty of options for everyone.
–REMEMBER, YOUR ON-LINE CODE IS ON THE BACK OF THE MANUAL. If you want to have access to all the on-line features, you need to enter the code. IF YOU BOUGHT THE GAME USED AND THE CODE WAS USED ALREADY, you’ll have to pay a fee to access the online features (I think it’s ).
In my first four days of owning this game, I already had about 20 hours of gameplay out of this game. You’ll get more for your money from this game than from almost any other. With many other games (non-sports and racing games), you’ll be luck to get 10-15 hours out a lot of games before you’re done with it and it’s collecting dust for good. You can play this game for a half hour at a time, or for hours by itself. You can mix it up when playing other games. Hockey is the most addictive and fun game there is. You won’t be engaged in drudgery.
For those who have never played EA hockey before, here are some of the basics:
SHOOTING–alway press upwards on the right stick, no matter where you are on the ice. If you have shooting set to manual, aim your shot with with left stick and press up on the right stick.
SHOT TYPES: quick shot/standard shot-up on the right stick, slap shot, wrist shot, fake slap shot, fake shot with kick leg.
PASSING and PUCK CONTROL–saucer pass, weaker pass, stronger pass, drop pass, dump puck, slap pass, fake slap shot, protect puck, dekes with right stick, dekes using left bumper and right stick, offensive boardplay with puck
DEFENSE: body check, hip check, poke check, sweep stick, stick lift, dive/block, pin player to boards and boardplay kick, hustle, glide
COACHING OPTIONS: you can adjust these in MY NHL or before the game during the setup. You can also adjust these during the game by using the D-pad. Pressing up on the D-pad will cycle through the forcheck strategies; right breakout pressue; down-defensive strategy; left defensive pressue. There will be a mini-video showing the players and how they will play their positions with the different strategies in MY NHL or during the pre-game setup.
Change forwards, defense and line strategies during the game.
GAMEPLAY OPTIONS. Most already described above. When starting out, ensure the pass assist is ON or you might be frustrated with passes that miss their target and get intercepted too often. Plus there’s CREATE A PLAY OPTION.
THE REASON I RECOMMEND AN UPGRADE FROM NHL 10: NHL 11 offers vialbe new options to play the game and a new and different hockey experience. NHL 10 is more arcady like especially when checking players. I played NHL 10 regularly for about six months. I was getting a little tired of doing the same thing. NHL 11 offers a few new features to play the game and also a new exerince when checking players. NHL 11 offeres the added dimension of making defense more fun it you want to pay less attention to the puck and more attention knocking player on their backs.
What I noticed and liked most when I first played the game compared to NHL 10:
1) Hustle option–great when you most need it. It’s also great for extra speed when your going to check someone (sometimes you might get a charging or boarding penalty to go with it).
2) Hip check: the way your opponent will do a summersault in various forms depending on how you hit them
3) The physics when checking the other players: lifelike, it all depends on how you hit them. The way the other player is taken out of the play, knocked to the ice or completely flattened on their back, or injured ir minimally affected all depends on how you hit them. The sound affects that go along with the hit are great too. The sound affects correspond to how good you hit them. The thundering sound of the boards too is great. And then seeing your opponent pick themselve up after being flattened or hit really hard–it looks human.
4) THE FACE OFF–all of the options I have available when taking a face off or just charge into my opponent to tie him up so a teammate can get the puck (as long as my opponent doesn’t win the face off).
5) The Canadien Hockey League, i.e., WHL, OHL Quebec juniors. New experience. It’s fun to play in that league and not just in the NHL all the time.
6) I first started playing NHL 10 in Feb.2010 and it had numerous speed and skill download add-ons for purchase form XBOX live (it seemed to be in the 10-20 range). I’m sure people who play on-line who purchase all those upgrades get the benefit from those. NHL 11 so far does’t have all of that. The only downloads I see so far is for a video and a demo. )In BE A PRO MODE, there are numerous attributes you can buy for your created player or a current player you’re assuming control of.)
Just to compare NHL 10 with NHL 11: NHL 10 is still a great game (and it doesn’t have that automatic and unexpected tornado spin slap shot as I described earlier to the left side of the net when you’re aimin to the upper right just because you skated from behind the net-not to my memory). NHL 11 offers the new physics engine which makes for a totally different experience of the game along with the CHL league teams.
If you still own NHL 10, I recommend buying NHL11 and also keeping NHL 10 too. NHL 11 isn’t really an upgraded version of NHL 10. NHL 11 is a uniquely different experience with the new physics. NHL 10 is more of an arcade game and NHL 11 is more realistic except for that automatic torando spin shot I described at the top.
