This one grabs you by the throat…
sorry, that was bad! I am a big Charlaine Harris fan and only mildly interested in vampires. But the combination of a an uncontrollably mind-reading heroine, newly legal vampires, a serial killer, a shape-shifter — how could I resist? I find I don’t want to say much at all about the plot, as it’s too easy to give away some really exciting twists. It’s fair to say that the story postulates vampires as a newly-emerged legal minority (word is they’ve been victimized by superstition, when really the poor people have been subjected to a terrible virus) with attendant vampire-philics and phobics roiling the waters of cultural change. Vampires can now subsist on artificial blood, so they don’t have to be a danger to anyone. Harris has thought through vampire culture and the interaction of that culture with “normal” society to great effect — the book would be fun to read just for that .

I have to admit, though, that nothing about the vampires interested me as much as the main character, Sookie. If you think you want to be able to know what other people are thinking, the limitations of Sookie’s life will make you think again. She’s brave, brilliant and decent and watching her (and her sex life) develop is a true joy.

Meanwhile, the book is tightly and extravagantly plotted and the psychological effects are fascinating and disturbing, absolutely gripping. Read it over a weekend or on vacation so you won’t have to put it down — you’ll just have to know what happens next!

Harris has set this up to continue as a series, and if she can continue this level of quality, people will be lining up for each new book.

A much better than average vampire mystery novel
Sookie Stackhouse lives in a world like ours – except for one difference, 4 years ago Vampires “came out of the coffin” and are now a legal part of USA society. In this way it’s somewhat like the situation in the Anita Blake (author Laurel Hamilton) novels, but in someways I think better written in this book.

Sookie herself is unusual with a disability that makes dating a virtual impossiblity until a vampire comes to town and she discovers he’s her (almost) perfect man. Unfortunatley, at the same time people start getting killed, which most of the locals see as an unlikely co-incidence, and in a small town that can almost be deadly itself.

The author has written a very readable book here. I’m not sure if it’s the start of a series or not – if it’s not – then it’s still an enjoyable stand alone novel. Her characters are believable and likeable, and I don’t remember any slow patches that make your attention wander. In fact, I read this in a day – the sign of a very good book for me.

For those people who like fiction that covers, vampires, PSI, alternative realities or mystery fiction, this book pretty well covers all those areas. Enjoy:)

An Intriguing Blend of Horror and Mystery!
Sookie Stackhouse has what she calls a “disability.” She’s a telepath. Now reading minds sounds like it might be a good thing, but as she points out it sort of gets in the way of relationships, sexual relationships in particularly. It’s hard for her to have sex and enjoy it when she knows the man she’s with thinks her breasts are too small or maybe he’s thinking of someone else. Besides, other people’s thoughts bombarding her all day drive her crazy. She works as a waitress in a bar and comes in contact with many people on a daily basis. So for her own sanity, and because she thinks it rude to listen in, she’s learn to block out the noise from the minds of others. Then Bill comes into her life. He’s the perfect boyfriend because she can’t read his thoughts at all. That’s because he has a disability of his own. He’s dead. He’s a vampire. Vampires have recently come out of the closet so to speak and exposed their existence to the world. All of this came about because of the creation of synthetic blood, making it possible for them to exist without preying on unwilling humans. They are the new minority and now wish to coexist with humans. Of course, the vampires-like any minority-have those who hate them. But they also have those who admire and adore them as well. These people are called fang-bangers. Three female fang-bangers suddenly turn up dead, murdered, and the vampires are quickly blamed. Fear fuels the fires of hatred and violence erupts between the humans and the undead. This puts Bill at risk. Also, Sookie fears that she’s next on the murderer’s list since she has a vampire boyfriend. So, with Bill’s help, she uses her “disability” to solve the mystery, and in the process she puts her own life on the line.
This is an extraordinary and original book; full of charm and wit, capturing small-town America to a T. Harris blends together several genres-horror, mystery, and a bit of Gothic romance-with ease and aplomb. She has a straight forward, just between you and me kind of style that’s fun and easy to read. One minute she’s making you laugh, the next she’s sending chills along your spine, and the next she’s got you wondering who done it. This book will entertain and keep you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend it.

But as is common with vampires, violence follows in his wake, and she becomes afraid that she might be more than just a spectator. Christine Marshall takes on a drawl that hints of Louisiana as she narrates for Sookie and the other female characters. She is joined by William Dufris, who assumes the role of the vampire, as well as the other male characters. worth its money ..
i got this filter for my canon 200mm f/2.8 .. i initially got the canon 72mm filter for it not convinced i should invest more in a protective layer of glass.. but i noticed that the canon filter was more prone to haze.. i can even feel that its not very clear if you look through it.. but when i bought another L lens i got a B&W 77mm filter with it and it was perfect.. i can instantly tell it is clearer and less prone to flare and haze.. the B&W is also slimmer . i replaced my canon 72mm filter with a B&W. the difference is noticable in image contrast .. you can even see better through the filter into the lens than with the canon mounted.. its also alot thinner … if you are thinking is 40 bucks alot for a filter that basically does nothing : yes it is .. if somethin hits the front element or you are in bad weather you would freak out .. you pay the extra money to make sure it does exactly nothing..

Be Careful it isnt bigger than you need
Ordered this thinking it would hold my SB600 and a set of batteries on my MAS enabled bag. But when I recieved it today realized it is WAY too big for that flash. When you put the batterys in the front pocket they disappear down a long pocket also. I have a tamrac bag and like the way you buy these attachments. But this is so big it was too long for my camera bag and hung down below it about 5 inces and slid around. The build quality also was thinner than thier other accessories. So if you are getting this for a SB600 flash, forget it… too big and thinly padded. I am going to try the medium size next.

This fits my Canon 580EXII flash exactly
I have this with my Tamrac Veloxcity bag. It attaches to the side, very securely, and exactly fits my 580EXII flash unit. It has a good Velcro closure. Makes getting to the flash very easy.

Works Good for Speedlight
I have the Canon 580EX Speedlight and fits perfectly. I would have given 5 stars if it had a magnetic clasp. The velcro is very loud and then you really have to tug to open (is that a bad thing?).

It is better than the one Canon supplies, it attaches nicely to my Tamrac bag.

Overall, I would buy again.

Edith Louisa Cavell (played by Anna Neagle) was a British nurse, serving as matron of the Berkendael Institute in Brussels, Belgium. After the Germany Army occupied Brussels, Miss Clavell’s faith would not let her sit still, and ignore the fate of Allied soldiers trapped behind enemy lines. And so she became involved in smuggling men out of the country. But, the Germans are the activities are going on, and they are determined to stop the flow of soldiers and those that are helping them.

This 1939 movie was made at the beginning of the Second World War, and was intended to remind the British people of heroes of yesterday. It is very well written, telling the story of the life and death of Nurse Clavell with a lot of power. I really enjoyed this moving movie, and do not hesitate to recommend it to you and your family.

(By the way, one of the characters in this movie is played by George Sanders, one of my favorite actors!)

A good movie, but a bad print.
Its a good movie. Well acted with an excellent cast. The problem is that the print badly needs some form of restoration. The sound is crackly, and at times inaudible, and the print is very dark – even the daylight scenes appear to be at night. I’m a big fan of Edna May Oliver, so am glad to have the movie for her performance alone. One hopes a better quality print will be issued in due course.

Nurse Edith deserved better treatment
Produced the year WW2 began in Europe (1939),Heroic examples were certainly needed.
My interest in the film was not with Nurse Edith or Dame Anna Neagle who played her; it was the sublime Edna May Oliver who I wanted to see. I’ve suffered thru Shirley Temple and bad hollywood Shakespeare to enjoy a few screen moments with this towering and sardonic figure. She seldom disappoints. There simply isn’t enough of her.

Story of the brave nurse who served the Allies so gallantly during WWI while working with the Belgian underground to aid wounded soldiers. English nurse Edith Cavell works in a small private hospital in German-occupied Brussels during WWI. When the son of a patient escapes from a German prisoner-of-war camp, Cavell aids him to reach Holland and safety. This leads to Cavell and other locals forming an underground organization to help other soldiers from Belgium, France, and England escape Germany as well. However, eventually the Germans hear news of Cavell and capture her, sentencing her to death by firing squad. There is not happy ending here, but Cavell faces her death with poise, bravery, and honor, like a modern-day Joan of Arc.

Excellent hifi: not just a “table top radio”
Just to qualify this review, I am not a techie or an audiophile. I listen to music mostly either through my ipod or live streaming on deezer (european rhapsody). However, having purchased this F80, I am now rediscovering my cd collection. The music reproduction is excellent quality: no matter how high you turn the volume the clarity is amazing AND even I can now hear the difference in quality between my iPod (reduced quality) and original CDs. Make sure you purchase the i80 Ipod dock with the F80 so you still have access to all your music, but I suspect you will listen again to your cds or simply burn your music lossless from now on. This is a perfect music system for a second room. Love it!!!

Although I watched the movie in a theater merely 20 miles away from Brooklyn, NY, the proximate locale of the movie’s theme, I could strongly sense that the movie succeeded immensely in transcending the big screen into the real people, culture, and everyday life of New Yorkers.

The choice of the story created enormous opportunities to all actors to shine at their best. There is no better place than New York that could inspire writers, actors, philosophers, reformers, and artists to marvel into the diversity of its people, its social strata, its financial inequalities, and its progressive social changes. The blue-collar workers who are fueling the gears of such mighty capitalistic machine have access to its lethal weapons of ending few lives and to its powerful currency of building greater and new lives. They were enticed by both powers in their immediate access yet deprived of any hope of bettering their lives through deciphering the laws and regulations that control that machine.

Each actor who took part in the movie fitted perfectly in the role he played (there were few female roles to start with). The faces, the skin textures, the accents, and the racial and age mix of the players, all reflect on the real people, their struggles, and the challenges they face in their every day life. The contemporary nature of the movie’s story and the abundance of amateur actors in urban America brought real people to play real roles.

The poor workers, whose occupation was to guard the treasury of the wealthy community, must compartmentalize their endless insecurities from those they protect. Their sharing of common struggle deprived them from their individual abilities to dissent. Their immediate herd is their ultimate authority, against which dissent amounts to capital rejection.

The only dissent that appeared attractive was snatching money by relying on the old trick of avoiding the mistakes that predecessors have made. Only a young man retained his sense of the line between crime and plain error. His dilemma of keeping his house and his brother under one roof, after losing both parents in one year, lent him the power of dissenting when confronting a scene of murder of an innocent person. His stars were aligned in his favor when he was able to save the life of a police officer, who would later testify to his true benevolence.

The rest of the followers appeared overwhelmed by their swift and unexpected entanglement in unfolding murders and robbery. Their struggle with sticking to the herd rules versus disentangling themselves from their bleak detriment characterized naïve persons, facing unfortunate life situations. Those with weak ego attempted to stay low, unnoticed until opportunities present themselves. Those with strong will attempted to make expedient decisions to solve immediate problems, in hope that luck would strike if they persevered. The only person, whose mind was wired to protect his only orphan brother, succeeded to the end maintaining his sanity.

Clearly, the movie succeeded in showing that the drift to abrupt criminal conduct was mere mitigating circumstances that drove a punch of desperate people to find a way out of their endless misery. All participants showed human decency of common people who happened to fall in the traps of poor judgment, enforced by never ending oppression of poverty, insecurity, and hard labor.

A little more suspense
The classic take on what happens when people get greedy. Yeah, the movie is for the most part predictable and somewhat cliche ridden. Overall, it’s not the worst movie I’ve seen. Good flick on a rainy day or night when nothing else is on. While it may not overwhelm you with it’s storyline you at least will be entertained…..and then go on about your business!

Morality unhinged
“Armored” is about a heist that goes all wrong, of the money from an armored vehicle, by the same security guards who are suppose to be safeguarding the money. Mat Dillon and Laurence Fishburne star in this edge of your seat thriller which explores to some degree the various dimensions of how human greed can warp people’s sense of morality.

A good cast does its best to make Armored roll, but while this heist flick certainly has its moments, it’s ultimately arrested by a predictable story, cliché-ridden dialogue, and ham-fisted direction. Matt Dillon plays Mike, the leader of a sextet of guards working for an armored truck company; other members of the team are portrayed by Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno, Skeet Ulrich, and Amaury Nolasco, but the key is newcomer Ty (Columbus Short), an Iraq War veteran whose parents have both died, leaving Ty to support his troubled younger brother and somehow pay the mortgage on the home their folks left behind. When Mike and the others cook up a scheme to steal a cool $42 million on their next delivery and then claim they were hijacked, Ty is dead set against it–until he goes home and is greeted by a child-welfare official who threatens to put his brother into foster care unless Ty can prove himself capable of looking after the kid (this is but one of the handy plot conveniences designed to push the story forward). Predictability is one thing, but director Nimrod Antal and screenwriter James V. Simpson’s setups are so on-the-nose that Helen Keller could see what’s coming (”Promise me nobody gets hurt,” Ty says to Mike, which guarantees that the body count will start to mount almost instantly). Armored has some good action sequences, a gritty look, a couple of welcome surprises, and the occasional tense moment. But when the great heist movies are recalled, from Topkapi to Sexy Beast, this one is unlikely to be among them. –Sam Graham

Absolutely loved them!
I just finished the trilogy and I loved them! I generally wouldn’t be drawn to anything with vampires in it, but the way Nora Roberts did these books were just awesome. I tend to read in spirts – a few minutes here and there and never more than a hour at a time… just comes with having two small children. So with these, by the second book, I was squeezing in extra time to read it and on the third, I finished within a few days with the help of a couple late nights. It was addicting – and I was sad when it was over! I’ve read a handful of Nora Roberts books and I think these were one of the best. Great read! I plan to read the trilogy again soon. I think I’ll enjoy them just as much the second time.

Absolutely loved this series!
I was looking for a vampire romance novel and was thrilled to see that Nora Roberts had written one. I was very quickly drawn into the series with the first book (finished it in 2 days!) and couldn’t wait to keep reading the next books. I finished all three books in 5 days. I liked the relationship between Hoyt and Cian. Yes, the characters are a bit stereotypical, but the story was entertaining and captivating. My favorite book was the last one (Valley of Silence), followed by the first one (Morrigan’s Cross). I felt that the central characters in the second book weren’t fully developed in the first book for me to relate to them as much. Nora Roberts, as always, was able to draw me in and have me crying and feeling what the characters felt. Fabulous!
