Customer Reviews:

Professional Quality Optics5
I have owned and used this lens professionally for over a year now and after a minor focus issue that was resolved very quickly by Sigma’s excellent service department I have to say this is the sharpest 24-70 lens I have used. I also have experience with the canon 24-70L lens which retails for just over a grand and the Sigma is sharper throughout the whole range(even at 2.8). The only negative thing I have to say about this lens is the noisy autofocus (Canon’s USM is much quieter). But it is still reasonably fast to AF. This is definately the best lens for the money in this zoom range and is without a doubt the best optically. Canon’s build quality and weather sealing are definately superior to the Sigma so if that is an issue, you may want to go with the Canon.

Just buy it5
I had read quite a few reviews of this lens before buying it for my D300. Some were great and others not so great. I picked it up to use as a portrait lens for location shoots. I haven’t experienced any problems whatsoever. Some say it’s soft at f2.8. Not mine. Tack sharp at all focal lengths. Some say the Autofocus is noisy(loud.) Not mine. Or maybe I’m just not that picky. If noisy means you can hear it then…yeah it can be noisy. Some say that the autofocus hunts. Not mine. In fact this lens focuses so fast I was amazed. Color rendition is good. Contrast is good. Bokeh is nice and smooth.

People raved about the Nikon 18-200vr so I bought one. It’s soft and slow in my experience. It was “ok” on my D70 but its flaws were multiplied on my d300. So even with the good reviews of this lens I was really worried about buying it but the price made me give it a try. I’m so glad I did. I could easily slip into another good Sigma or halfway decent Nikon lens with the money I saved over going with the Nikon equivalent. It makes me wonder how their competitor to Nikon’s 18-200vr stacks up.

My only “complaint” about this lens is that the zoom ring is small, stiff, and at the base of the lens. It’s sometimes hard to get to and a bit backward from what I’m used to. A minor annoyance is that switching to manual focus is a 2 step process. The lens will stay in autofocus even after locking the clutch down as long as the camera is still in autofocus. Be careful with this because you could damage your camera’s motor drive if you have a tight grip on your lens. You’ll know the lens is set to manual when you try to focus and the focus ring turns on its own. I also found it odd that the lens is at it shortest when zoomed all the way in and longest when backed off to 24mm. Strange…maybe I’m missing something here but all my other zooms are the opposite.

It’s big and bulky. I actually like this because I have big hands and find it easier to stabilize heavier equipment. And as dumb as it sounds…it looks good on the camera. Those out of “the-know” will judge you based on these types of things at times.
Nice big lens = professional right?
As long as you’re a potential paying customer…um…yeah! Of course!

I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet but I’ve heard some people complain about lens flare and that hood is useless to protect against it. I like lens flare and use it creatively in my own photography so it’s not anything I would consider a minus. For me a lens hood is something I use to keep from bumping the end of my lens into stuff. I can see though how people could get annoyed if it’s unexpected. But if you’re getting unexpected flare in your shots you’re not doing your job as a photographer and paying proper attention to your scene.

Update 6/17/2008
I’ve been shooting with this lens for a few weeks now and my above observations are accurate. However the lens flare issue is a bit more than I thought. I had a hard time getting the “touch of flair” I like in some backlit shots. It was more like “holy crap that’s a lot of flair!” The hood does seem a bit useless but I tend to bump into stuff so it’s good to protect the end of the lens. I’d still buy it and fully recommend it at 5 stars.

Great f2.8 for the price!4
Disclaimer: used it for 4 months+, on Canon Rebel XT 350D and Canon 430 film camera, I am an ameteur shooter.

Pro:
Full time MF.
constant 2.8.
Great contrast and color, consistent with my other Sigmas,
nice weight, fit and finish.

Neutral:
OK AF speed indoor and outdoor
f2.8 isn’t fast enough in many indoor situations with moving subjects. I have to use flash with it.

Con:
Arrived with severe front-focus problem. Fixed under warranty.
Zoom could be smoother.
AF whines a bit, but tolerable;
Border not as sharp as center.
Sharp only after stop down. But usable wide open for me

Conclusion:
Probably not pro grade, but for the build quality at this price, it’s a winner! (I deducted 1 star because of the less than perfect IQ.)

Update:
This claims to be a macro lens without HSM, so the so-so AF speed is excused. Got a very shallow DOF wide open. So IQ can be very low if AF is not spot on wide open. This is not a great low light lens as I thought it would be. But with good light, the IQ is excellent with fantastic color and contrast. Considering the price, it’s not a bad deal really.

Update: March 2009
Just got my used 28-70 2.8L. It looks used and the MF is problematic, but the IQ(sharpness/color/contrast) is so much better than this Sigma, not to mention flair resistance, light fall off on full frame, AF. Contrary to the Sigma, the Canon L is very much usable at f2.8. Only the border sharpness improves significantly stop down. And I got the L used for not much more than the Sigma brand new. The L is a bit bigger but not really heavier in hand, both feel handful. I am a pack-rat so I’ll keep my Sigma. I guess without the Sigma I couldn’t have really appreciated the L lens anyway! Sigma just came out with a Mark II of its 24-70 with HSM, priced into $800+ range. I think if you like it cheap, Mark I is a steal now, if you have the cash, go for the L. If you are lucky, there might just be a good used L out there for you somewhere :)

Customer Reviews:

Fast and large CF card5
I upgraded from my 20MB/s 8GB card when I got my new Canon 7D camera. The new camera takes pictures approximately 30mb per image, at 6 pictures per second. This card does not lag unless I shoot dozens of pictures in a burst.

I take pictures at concerts and tend to take bursts of 2-6 pictures every few seconds (lighting changes fast and people move fast). This card works amazingly well with my camera, I highly recommend it.

32Gb Sandisk5
Sandisk 32GB 60MB/sec compact flash card is a good product. I went on vacation for 11 days. I took at leatd 4000 pictures and video using my new Canon 7D. The CF card performed beautifully. I really like this card.

Amazing cards for the current crop of digital cameras.5
Whether you’re shooting a short video on your new DSLR or fashion with a medium format digital back, this card has you covered. It’s fast and spacious so all you have to worry about is shooting and not changing cards. With a 21mp camera, you can expect about 1000 raw files.

Customer Reviews:

Fine camera–BUT BEWARE…2
This is a decent camera for the money. Large HD and easy to use laser-touch controls make using the camera a breeze. BUT–the camera records the video files in a file format called .MOD. This is different from the standard .mwv/.avi/.mov files which are supported by most media players and video editing programs. JVC provides a very sub-par program which allows users to download/manage/edit/convert the files, but because this camera records in this MOD format, users are stuck, forced to use the JVC-provided software. This software is fine for very simple home use–uploading to YouTube or converting to iPod, but if you want to do anymore than that (like use the files in Windows Movie Maker) forget it. They won’t work. To get these MOD files into a usable format, there are a few MOD file converters out there, but be prepared to try each to find the one that works for your needs and then shell out additional $ for the software.

My taking the time to discover all this was more of an inconvenience than anything else, but buyers need to be aware of what they are getting with the Everio BEFORE they buy.

don’t be mislead……5
The ease of use, and quality for the money CANNOT be disputed….. I have been using this camera for a while now, and all around, it’s great.

The software is well rounded and refined, and the features are second to none. I bought this, and have NO regrets whatsoever. Don’t be put off because of the movie file extensions, as it is not a problem like the guy in the other review said. If you are not computer literate, then buy the VERY handy dvd burner that is directly compatible with this camera, also made by JVC, which is Everio/hd Share Station Portable DVD Burner, model number CUVD3. Just type that into amazon and search, easy as pie.

overall, a fantastic camcorder, and VERY EASY to use… even I figured it out without the instruction book.

Awesome system, just get it and don’t get bogged down in the complications of the other camcorders available….

5 stars, my highest recommendation.

Not the mother of all beasts, but exceeds epectations for the price4
I’ve had this camera for a about a week now, so far it’s exceeded my expectations. Here was few points of criteria for me:
1. Trying to stay around the 300 dollar budget (factoring in the cost of flash cards vs. built in hard drive allowed for a leverage of going over). 80GB = 19 hrs of recording time at the highest level settings, more then enough for vacation, christmas, babies first step and then some! I look at it as a plus, how many people do you know or how many times have you used a tape and re-recorded over some event, accidentally…
2. Good lens, provides good zoom range, plus some sort of stabilization (digital seems to work fine for me), would of preferred optical stabilization though.
3. Low lux, this camcorder, based on the reviews I read, had better then average for standard def video against camcorders at the same price point. Most HD camcorders at this price point performed very poorly.
4. HDMI output, what’s not to love about being able to use 1 cable to hook up to the tv?

If you’ve gotten this far, and done a little research on this camera, then you’ve read the complaints about movie file format. Well, they work fine in windows 7, plays them fine, right off the camcorder with windows media player, and can be edited by windows movie maker, only issue with it, is that is doesn’t read time & date stamps that are associated with each .mod file.

Pros:
small, price, hdmi output, recording time.
Cons:
no mic input, not sold on the laser touch functionality.

I’ve included a link below for the review site that helped me in my decision.

From the Manufacturer

The JVC Everio GZ-MG670 features a 80 GB hard disk drive and a 1/6-inch 800,000-pixel CCD image sensor. It also uses a Konica Minolta lens with a 40x dynamic zoom and 800x digital zoom. Dynamic zoom achieves up to 40x magnification by using nearly all of the CCD’s effective pixels without any picture quality degradation.

For sharing, the Everio MG670 makes it easy to watch videos on an iPod or iPhone by exporting videos to the user’s iTunes library with the new One Touch Export function provided by bundled software for Windows. This joins the One Touch Upload function for uploading to YouTube, for 2009 a feature available on all Everio camcorders, and One Touch DVD Creation function for easy archiving and sharing by disc, a long-time Everio feature.

Everio Features

All 2009 Everios make sharing and watching videos easier than ever. New for this year is the One Touch Export function that allows Everio videos to be imported into iTunes and loaded into an iPod or iPhone. All 2009 Everios also offer One Touch DVD burning and the One Touch Upload function that JVC introduced to users in 2008 as a new and convenient way to upload videos to YouTube.

To use any of the three functions, simply connect Everio to a PC using the supplied USB cable. Then, the user chooses one of three buttons on the Everio: UPLOAD, EXPORT, or DIRECT DVD. Pressing the button will launch the appropriate Windows PC application that comes bundled with Everio, and the user simply follows the simple on-screen prompts. With just a few mouse clicks the process of uploading to YouTube, exporting to iTunes, burning to disc or transferring to an external hard disk drive will be completed. For uploading to YouTube, the user can perform an in-camera edit of any length video to fit the 10-minute YouTube limit.

For disc based archiving, there is an alternative to using a PC. JVC offers the CU-VD50 Direct DVD Burner/Player as an option, which allows burning of Everio videos to a DVD disc without having to use a PC.

The new Everio MediaBrowser software supplied with all Everio models is a Windows application providing an easy-to-search calendar-type graphical interface for indexing and finding video files. Thumbnail images of recorded videos and stills are superimposed on the calendar so it’s easy to see when any scene was recorded. The Everio MediaBrowser also allows easy playback, simple cut editing, and “Decomotion” to spruce up recorded footage with animated graphics for upload to YouTube. It also supports Export to iTunes, Upload to YouTube, burning to disc or transferring to HDD.

Another new feature found on all Everio camcorders is Digest Playback, which offers an easy and entertaining way to check the content residing on Everio’s HDD or SD/SDHC card. The function automatically selects highlight scenes from among the recorded content using JVC’s proprietary algorithm and plays back what looks like a “coming attractions” trailer for a movie. Sixty minutes of footage is condensed into five minutes of highlight scenes.

Other Everio features have been enhanced for 2009. Laser Touch Operation has been updated to allow control of zooming and recording using either the Laser Touch scroll bar or buttons next to the LCD screen, as well as by the standard zoom lever and REC button. And as before, Laser Touch makes it easy to browse through thumbnail images of recorded scenes and access menu selection. Power-linked operation, long offered by JVC, goes a step further this year. Simply opening the LCD monitor automatically opens the built-in lens cover and powers up the camcorder. Closing the LCD also closes the lens cover and shuts down the power. With Quick Restart, recording can start in about one second after the LCD is re-opened.

In addition to performance and convenience, the 2009 Everio line offers plenty of style and shooting comfort. A new design features elegant curves, a silver-framed LCD and a comfortable angled grip with a new dual use strap. The strap can be used in the usual camcorder fashion, supporting the user’s hand when shooting, or it can be extended and used as a wrist strap like the type on most digital still cameras.

Customer Reviews:

Don’t waste your money1
Don’t bother buying this because Mustek does not offer any support at all! Not even user manuals (I lost mine)! It was a waste of the $60 I paid. The camera works, but it is just average at best. Now I don’t have a manual and can’t even get one. There is no excuse for this except the company just does not care. This camera is now just JUNK! Worthless without support. So, don’t waste your money on any Mustek product since they don’t support what they sell…

The rating of one star is because they do let us rate with zero stars which is what I would give this product if I could!

Never buy a Mustek1
Please never buy a Mustek product. I bought one and I am still regretting till date why I did it. I couldn’t even get to take one picture. The Camera keeps freezing, and I was not even able to get bright picture each time I used. Please get something else. A word to a wise is sufficient.

Customer Reviews:

Lots of features and lots of issues…2
I debated buying this NX409 but couldn’t resist the price/feature list. While it’s loaded with about every feature you could want not all of them work or don’t work the way they should.

Navigation:
The GPS doesn’t update fast enough so that the vehicle position indicator is not correctly displayed on the map relative to the cross streets especially at speed. The turn by turn voice guidance sometimes says to turn right when you actually are turning left. Many of the POI’s are not accurate both for location on the map and also that some don’t exist. If you can get beyond the robotic tone and poor text to speech pronunciation…the voice guidance also truncates some road names. Two of the features listed in the GPS menu don’t work at all (like the alert tone option when you are approaching your turn). This may be a software bug as they won’t even stay selected.

Sirius Radio:
Mostly works well except way too often you’ll power the unit up and all the presets you spent time getting just the way you want are gone. That gets old after about the 5th time.

Ipod:
I plugged in my Shuffle to the USB port and it says “unrecognized file format”. So I thought I’d check that it’s on the list of supported Ipods on the Clarion site. Click on Ipod compatability list and gee…”page not found”. At least there’s some synergy between their products and the web site.

Other:
The Bluetooth BLT 370 option is a waste of money. Way too often when you start the car it will lock up the radio with a “phone in use” displayed( even when there is no cell phone within a mile of the vehicle)…you then have to shut off the ignition and open the door to get it to power down then restart the car. It sync’s up with the phone great but everyone says I sound like I’m calling from the Mariana trench.

The clock setting can only be set manually. When you select your correct time zone and DST to sync the time using the GPS it’s off by two hours.

Last but not least Clarion’s support both on the web site and by phone is a waste of time.

On a positive note the quality of the audio is very good as is the DVD display.

Solid product4
I got my from Crutchfield for ~$350 and am just copying and pasting the review… Some of this may not apply to Amazon.

Just set mine up yesterday after getting some connection accessories from Home Depot. Actually just installed the whole thing in the parking lot of Home Depot. I have a 2005 Nissan Altima and I was able to do the whole job with:
1) Philips screwdriver
2) Electrical tape
3) Exacto knife (because I didn’t have wirestrippers. I’d recommend wire strippers because the wires in the NX409 harness are not pre-stripped. If you’re desperate, you can use your teeth, I’ve done that before in the past too. )
4) Wire nuts (not necessary, I just wanted a cleaner install. Electrical tape should work just fine)

The adapter that came from Crutchfield was a little too simple. All it was is literally just a trim piece between the dashboard and the headunit, no brackets, no screws, nothing else. Just a plastic border. So I had to reuse the factory brackets to mount/secure the NX409. Placement was a little tricky too on the factory brackets to the NX409 because there are a variety of hole alignments. I had to try a couple of times to get NX409 centered with the dashboard hole for the double-DIN radioslot.

Items connect:
All speakers
Radio antenna
GPS antenna (the GPS antenna came with a really long wire which I assumed that I should run somewhere to with line of sight to the sky, but since I was in the Home Depot parking lot, I just rolled the wire back up and threw the antenna in the back of dashboard. After turning the GPS on, there seemed to be good signal with me getting a lot of bars and the bars being green, instead of red)
USB cable included in box
Dimmer wire

After installation:
Everything seemed to work fine. The tuner worked and gets clear reception and presets work well. The CD feature works, but it takes a really LONG time to load. I’m talking probably about a full 40-60 seconds to load the CD. On the bright side though, the NX409 does read the song track names and artist names off the CD and display it. The GPS features did take a while to figure out, but you’ll get used to it. (But the first address I inputted and actually tried driving to, it got me to a destination that was 2 miles from where I wanted to go….so GPS update is topic that I’m really concerned about. The other 4-5 address that I put in, got me to the correct destinations.) I can’t get the damn clock to store right time!! This is driving me nuts. I haven’t studied the manual at all regarding this issue, but how hard can it be? Oh and the time on the GPS is different than the time on the tuner…neither of which is the right time I haven’t tried the DVD player mainly because I left the green wire from the NX409 (supposed to be connected to the parking brake) unconnected.

It was fairly easy to install but I didn’t complete the job 100%:
-Still need to run a USB extension cable
-Still need to go back in to figure out a way to use the DVD player (more research needed)

Exceptional Sound Quality4
I am another who got it through crutchfield for $350(thanks slickdeals!)

- GPS works as it should…Seems very accurate to me, so IDK about the other review that says otherwise.
- As someone else already mentioned, the radio presets wipe-out from time to time. I don’t listen to radio so
it’s no big deal for me.
- I use my IPOD video 30gig primarily and it works every time without flaws.
- DVD works fine, no issues.(bypass mod done)
- As I mentioned, the sound quality was shockingly good.

I take points away for only having a 2-band EQ with selectable frequencies for each(not true parametric eq),
and the screen can be tough to see in bright sunlight, but I’m not sure it would be any better with most others…
For what I paid, it was a complete steal!
